2013 collection from the Indie Pop band. One of the flagship bands on the Popgun label, the Casino Ashtrays consisted of Laura Watling and Popgun honcho, Raoul de la Cruz. Formed as more a way to pass the time than any sort of grand plan, the duo released a few cassettes on Popgun, as well as a CD EP on Twee Kitten and a couple other compilation appearances. This disc collects almost all of their output, most of it available here for the first time on CD! Sometimes melancholic, sometimes upbeat but always sweet!

Brought the adventure to life

I didn’t expect to feel so pulled into these ancient stories, but this translation made the adventures and struggles feel real and vivid. The language is modern enough to understand easily but keeps the weight and drama of Homer’s world. It’s the kind of book that makes you appreciate why these stories have lasted so long, and it’s been a rewarding read I’m glad I added to my shelf.

Finally made Homer click for me

I’ve tried reading The Iliad and The Odyssey before but always got lost in the language. This translation is clear and smooth while keeping the epic feel of the stories. It helped me actually enjoy the characters and battles without feeling like I was stuck in a high school assignment. It’s made these classics feel alive and human, and I’m glad I gave it another try with this version.

Epic tales that still resonate

I dove into Dawson’s twin translation of The Iliad and The Odyssey hoping for clarity—and instead found myself struck by their emotional pull. Achilles’ fury, Hector’s honor, Odysseus’ longing for home—it all felt immediate and real. Dawson’s language flows so naturally, I forgot I was reading an ancient text. There were moments I stopped and sighed, moved by how these characters still speak to our hearts today.

Timeless adventure, beautifully retold
