Jungle Adventures - The I.W. SeriesThe story of I. W Publications is fascinating. In the late 1950s, when the comic world went into a slump, Israel Waldman hit on the idea of buying up storage facilities and physical materials of defunct comic companies. With the letterpress plates in hand, he started to churn out cheap reprints of comics from these (and other companies). It was done without regard to intellectual property rights, and of course most of his books were entirely illegal

The story of I.W Publications is fascinating. In the late 1950s, when the comic world went into a slump, Israel Waldman hit on the idea of buying up storage facilities and physical materials of defunct comic companies. With the letterpress plates in hand, he started to churn out cheap reprints of comics from these (and other companies). It was done without regard to intellectual property rights, and of course most of his books were entirely illegal - - but since most of the companies were no longer around, that didn't bother him much. In 1958, and again in 1963-64, Waldman produced a total of 332 issues covering 118 different titles. The numbering was erratic, the contents didn't always match the cover, and the quality varied widely. Interestingly, I.W. did produce one original comic (Marty Mouse, 1958) and many of the books had original covers by well-respected artists of the day. The I.W. Reprints (aka Super Comics) are pooh-poohed by some collectors today, but the true comic fan and historian see them as a part of history, alternative versions of stories Ð and for the reprinter today, with most of the books now in the public domain, occasionally better versions of stories than we can find in their original form.
This book reprints the 5-issue Jungle Adventures series (#10, 12, 15, 17& 18) plus both issues of the Ka'a'nga series (#1,8) and the lone Sheena book (#9). Jungle Adventures ÒadoptedÓ great Fiction House, Fox and Avon vine-swingers: Rulah, Jo-Jo, Ka'a'nga, Sheena, Taanda and more. These are some of the top jungle characters of the 1950s gathered together in new form!

Good finish, poor hardware.
Set screws are poor quality and are sometimes powdercoated on the exposed threads. Leads to striped hex sockets and inability to tighten properly. Durable finish as evidenced by no visible damage after throwing parts across the shop in frustration. Ended up running self tapping screws thru parts to complete assembly.

Kinda flimsy…
Thought the assembly was metal, it’s some kind of PVC.

Cheaper than the supply house.
Size: 42'' x 28''
I used black pipe similar to this to build some shelves in my man cave. I went looking to build a studio desk and found that Lowe's wanted $8 per floor flange (~$96 just for flanges and not including the pipe, tees, or the other fittings). Even supply house dot com wanted $4 per flange (~$48, but was still missing the other parts AND they didn't offer them because of supply chain issues). For about $65, this was a great buy. Yes everything is greasy. This will be the case regardless of where you buy it. I used some gloves, shop towels, and acetone and it cleaned up easily. For a top, I used a pre-made countertop from Lowe's (~$100) and a 1x4 piece of poplar I had sitting around.

Pipes don't assemble square, nice stand though.
Size: 42'' x 28''
These arent standard SCH40 pipe for starters. Significantly lighter. Easier to move around and sturdy enough to support a table, but this isnt pipe. As such, when I threaded it together, it wasn't square. I was able to flatten it mostly, but I had to use a clamp to bend the assembled piping to sguare so it would attach to the table runners. It's fine, but it surprised me. It looks nice, and it provides plenty of support for the table. All good. Several folks complained that the pipes are oily. They are supposed to be to prevent rust. I wiped them down with a few cleaner wipes, and they are fine. Be aware that this doesn't come with instructions or the wood screws you may need for your table top.
