INSPIRATION INFORMATION #162

Zonder persfoto’s, muziekvideo’s, optredens of zelf credits lijkt Sault de muziek voorop te zetten, en deze te presenteren zonder al te veel afleiding. Desondanks zweven er zo wat namen rond de mysterieuze groep, zoals die van Cleo Sol, Little Simz en producer Inflo, maar kijk niet gek op als de stemmen van Michael Kiwanuka of Chronixx ineens opduiken.

Op typische Sault manier verschenen er afgelopen november ineens vijf platen tegelijk, zonder enige uitleg of aankondiging, die nu ook fysiek te krijgen zijn. Het klinkt als een kleine overkill, zei het niet dat iedere plaat zijn eigen geluid en invalshoek heeft. Untitled (God) ligt, mede vanwege z’n titel, duidelijk in lijn met eerdere platen. Met ongeveer 75 minuten ook gelijk de langste, waarbij er genoeg verassingen langskomen, zoals een bloedmooie Michael Kiwanuka nummer.

Ook Aiir verwijst naar een eerdere Sault plaat, namelijk het orkestrale Air (ook uit 2022). De zo typerende fundatie van bas en drums worden hier ingeruild voor groots aandoende koorstukken en majestueuze strijkers. Bij Earth wordt er juist weer extra nadruk gelegd op drums en percussie, waarbij de titel zijn naam waar maakt. Invloeden van over de hele wereld, met een nadruk op Afrika, zorgen voor een spirituele en ritmische trip.

Luister Aiir / Luister Earth

Op 11 staat de R&B voorop, waarop de band schittert in een bijzondere less is more aanpak. Her en der wordt er geflirt met house en synthpop, om vervolgens weer als een soort Sade-tribute band uit de hoek te komen. Wellicht het meest verrassende van het vijftal blijft Today & Tomorrow. Op deze langspeler laat Sault zich van zijn meest ruige kant horen. Duidelijke referentiepunten zijn Bad Brains, Zamrock, White Stripes en de gospel-punk van Death. Wat voor alle vijf de platen geldt is een fijngevoelige no nonsense productie, die soms heerlijk gortdroog is.

Does exactly what it says!
Let me preface this review by saying I am not a trend follower. Truth be told, I only watch animals in FB and Tiktok videos. That being said, I'm 43 and have hair growing on my face like I was dipped in a vat of testosterone. The one she buys is different than this one, and much more expensive. My maiden voyage was totally my fault. I had two too many glasses of fun juice and way too much confidence to weild a blade. I ended up with one shorter eyebrow and a couple of cheek slices that required a little more than light compression. Luckily, I was going to a rock concert the next day, so I couldn't have planned the snafu at a better time. When I tried again, with zero caffeine and hydrated to the max, it was an absolutely amazing result. I used a thin layer of coconut oil because I didn't have aloe (reviews). Not only did everything get smooth (seriously couldn't stop touching myself), but I realized I should use coconut oil more often. I even think after some practice I won't be afraid to cut my jugular because I hiccup or sneeze. This product is 100% worth the low price, just as long as you're sober, experienced, or willing to bleed out.
